BHARATANATYAM CLASS IN UKM

It was the first time, I'm joining in a classical dance which is Bharatanatyam in UKM. Actually, i took it as my co-curricular activity. Bharatanatyam is a pre-eminent Indian classical dance form presumably the oldest classical dance heritage of India is regarded as mother of many other Indian classical dance forms. Conventionally a solo dance performed only by women, it initiated in the Hindu temples of Tamil Nadu and eventually flourished in South India.

Apart from that, their costumes also look different. They wears a gorgeous tailor-made sari that consists of a cloth specially stitched in pleats that falls in the front from the waist and when the dancer performs spectacular footwork that include stretching or bending her knees, the cloth widens up like a hand fan. The sari worn in a special manner is well complimented with traditional jewellery that include the ones that adorn her head, nose, ear and neck. Plus, vivid face make-up specially highlighting her eyes so that audience can view her expressions properly.

During the first day of bharatham class, they teach us the basic steps. That's also really tough for us because their dancing manner is totally different and our body should be flexible while dancing. So, we try to stretch our body to do it. We cannot do it well but they give excuse to us because it was our first class. Then, start from second class, no more excuses for us. We have to learn as soon as possible because we have to perform during the big event of our citra. Even more the dancing steps all become too difficult. We should concentrate on both hands and legs on the same time. Oh my god!!!!... We struggle a lot to learn it. One of my friend is a bharatam dancer. So, she is the one who help us to teach the each of every step. Every week, before our bharatham class starts, my friends and I recalled the dance steps and practice a while. This is because later when the class starts, it will be easy for us to dance.

We are still practicing for the event. The event is going to held on 15th Dec 2018. Hope we can do our best and get good marks.

DEEPAVALI

WHY INDIANS CELEBRATE DEEPAVALI ?

Deepavali is called the Festival of Lights and is celebrated to honor Rama-chandra, the seventh avatar (incarnation of the god Vishnu). It is believed that on this day Rama returned to his people after 14 years of exile during which he fought and won a battle against the demons and the demon king, Ravana. People lit their houses to celebrate his victory over evil (light over darkness). The goddess of happiness and good fortune, Lakshmi, also figures into the celebration. It is believed that she roams the Earth on this day and enters the house that is pure, clean, and bright.

The Deepavali festival in southern India often commemorates the conquering of the Asura Naraka, a powerful king of Assam, who imprisoned thousands of inhabitants. It was Krishna, a deity worshipped in Hinduism, who was finally able to subdue Naraka and free the prisoners. Deepavali celebrations may vary in different communities but its significance and spiritual meaning is generally “the awareness of the inner light”. It is also the beginning of the new financial year for the business community.

WHEN THEY CELEBRATE DEEPAVALI ?

The festival falls between the middle of October and the middle of November. Usually, this is decided upon by the Hindu lunar calendar.

WHAT THEY DO DURING DEEPAVALI ?

Those celebrating the festival also light traditional earthen diyas (candles) and decorate their houses with colourful rangoli artworks – patterns created on the floor using coloured rice or powder. During Deepavali, families and friends share sweets and gifts and there is also a strong belief in giving food and goods to those in need. It is also traditional for homes to be cleaned and new clothes to be worn at the time of the festival.

UNIQUE ARCHITECTURE IN NEGERI SEMBILAN-MALAYSIA

Seri Menanti Old Palace

This palace is a four storey wooden structure built between 1902 and 1908 as a royal palace for the rulers of Negeri Sembilan state. Its unique style and the fact that it was built without the use of nails make it worthy of inclusion on this list of architecture in Malaysia. It has been turned as Royal Museum Seri Menanti.

History of this building is Negeri Sembilan translates as ‘nine states’ referring to the nine territories which made up the confederation from 1773 onwards. The rulers of this state are of Minangkabau origin having migrated from western Sumatra about six centuries ago bringing their distinctive customs and architectural style with them. This building was built by two highly skilled local craftsmen, aided by technical drawings provided by the British head of the Public Works Department.

Although the palace incorporates a sloping roofline, which is characteristic of Minangkabau architecture, the design is actually unique to Negeri Sembilan, perhaps with an element of colonial influence thrown in.

In the 13th-century it was breached by the ferocious onslaught of the Mongols and then in the 17th-century by the Manchu.
